VDL Groep takes over activities Componenta
VDL Groep of Eindhoven and curator Peter Brouns from Boels Zanders Advocaten of Venlo today reached an agreement in principle regarding the acquisition of the activities of Componenta by VDL Groep. Notification of the acquisition has been submitted to the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM). Componenta is an iron and metal foundry with locations in Weert and Heerlen, in the province of Limburg. The foundries will soon continue under the name VDL Castings Weert and VDL Castings Heerlen. Initially, a portion of the over 300 employees will be hired straight away. VDL expects customers to resume ordering at previous volumes and that over time a significant portion of the employees can be rehired.
Componenta makes parts for trucks and earthmoving and road construction machines. These activities fit well with VDL Groep's other subcontracting activities. VDL knows the market and there are many common customers.
Continuing production proved crucial
On 14 September of this year the curator announced that the major customers were willing to cooperate in order to make continued production possible for a period of at least three months. This turned out to have been a decisive factor, as it meant that the key customers could be retained. Big name customers include MAN, Scania, Daimler, Caterpillar, Kawasaki, Borgwarner, Bomag, Volvo and Vestas.
Curator Peter Brouns of Boels Zanders Advocaten: "This is a fantastic outcome: a restart while retaining many of the jobs over the long term. The employees of Componenta deserve a great compliment; they have demonstrated tremendous dedication and a commitment to supplying good products to the customers during the past two months under very difficult and uncertain circumstances."
Constructive collaboration works council, unions and Province of Limburg
The Componenta works council and the Dutch unions (FNV, De Unie, ACV and ABW) contributed significantly to the success of the restart, as both were important sparring partners for the curator and his team during the period of continued production. The Province of Limburg was also very cooperative in the efforts to preserve as many jobs as possible.
Marleen van Rijnsbergen, Province of Limburg provincial executive member for Work and Welfare: "The Province of Limburg is pleased that the knowledge and employment at Componenta was saved by VDL. As at VDL Nedcar, we want to invest in the employees’ knowledge and skills through training vouchers. Working together with VDL Groep in this way we can maintain and strengthen the manufacturing industry in Limburg."
