Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV)

31 July 2017

In the Finished Products division, collaboration between VDL Containersystemen and VDL Steelweld has led to the further development of the Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) that allows unmanned vehicle movements in a manned environment.

The modular vehicle construction has been adapted such that with intelligent integration of computers, cameras, sensors and scanners, a certified safety level can be achieved. This vehicle ties in seamlessly with the ambitions of VDL Groep to become the leading specialist in the field of the electrification of heavy-duty vehicles.

VDL Steelweld and VDL Containersystemen have together established the sales cluster VDL Automated Vehicles. In this way, the AGV segment will be further professionalised to supply automated guided vehicles for use inside and outside port environments. According to the established plans, delivery of a prototype to the chemical conglomerate BASF in Ludwigshafen (Germany) will take place in mid-2017. This hybrid vehicle can be powered electrically and via a diesel engine, and will travel planned routes, unmanned, in a manned environment. This innovation helped the VDL Groep reach the final of the Automotive Innovation Award. This innovation is a perfect example of the strategy of VDL Groep in the field of mobility.
