VDL De Meeuw constructs 286 modular homes for Amersfoort

On behalf of the Alliantie Development, VDL De Meeuw is building 286 movable homes in the new district Bovenduist in Amersfoort. Production will start in early 2026, and from March to July 2026, the construction modules will be delivered and placed. Once the first buildings are assembled, galleries, balconies, and facades will be installed. Subsequently, the homes will be further finished and prepared for use. The municipality of Amersfoort and OntwikkelBedrijf Vathorst (OBV) are collaborating on this project. After completion, housing corporation de Alliantie will rent out the homes.

This is the second largest order for apartments at a single location for VDL De Meeuw. In 2024, the specialist in modular flexible accommodation from Oirschot received an order for approximately 500 modular apartments in Nijmegen. These homes were built in seven months.

The homes in Amersfoort will become part of the new district Bovenduist, with over 3,300 homes in total, a business park, hockey fields and various facilities. The 286 modular  homes being built are the first of Bovenduist. They consist of 240 social rent homes and 46 mid-market rent homes, intended for starters, couples and small families.

'Make better use of scarce space'

Councillor Willem-Jan Stegeman (Bovenduist): “The demand for housing in Amersfoort is much greater than the supply. Understandable, because this city is a really great place to live. For the many people looking for a home, we are therefore building quickly together with housing associations and developers. Permanent housing, but also temporary and movable homes in locations suitable for them. This way, we make better use of the scarce space in our city, and assist those seeking accommodation”.

The apartments are spread across ten buildings ranging from four to six floors. All apartments have a balcony that is as wide as the home itself. Each building has parking facilities for bicycles. Cars are parked along the edge of the neighborhood, on the side facing the polder.

VDL De Meeuw contributes to the rapid, efficient, and sustainable realization of the project through its industrial, modular construction method. By manufacturing many components in advance in the factory, the construction time is significantly reduced and the quality remains high. The homes meet the current standards for sustainability and comfort.
